National Day 2016 parade at Dataran Merdeka

The Hari Merdeka Parade (Independence Day Parade) is an annual parade held every 31 August in commemoration of Malaya’s independence. Since independence, the event has been usually held at Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur in commemoration of it being the original site of the first independence parade, which was held on 1 September 1957.

Malaysia celebrates its 59th year of Independence. Thousands of Malaysians took part in the Independence Day parade at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on August 31 2016. We bring you what’s happening behind the pictorial celebration.

They come from different walks of life but as thousands thronged Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur, they showcased what Sehati Sejiwa (One Heart One Soul) truly means. The theme, which was selected for its second consecutive year, describes the people’s unity in diversified nation.
